PCB Layers
Refer to the individual conductive copper sheets and insulating materials stacked together to form a circuit board. A board's layer count specifically counts its conductive copper layers, ranging from 1 layer to 30+ layers in complex electronics.
Functional Layer Types in a Stackup
Signal Layers: Inner or outer copper layers dedicated to routing data and electrical signals between components.
Plane Layers: Solid copper sheets used as dedicated Power Planes (distributing voltage) or Ground Planes (providing a reference voltage and electromagnetic shielding).
Prepreg & Core: Non-conductive insulating materials (fiberglass/epoxy) placed between copper layers to bond them together and provide structural support.
